At AirCare Solutions, we’re in the business of finding innovative solutions for our client’s needs. Window-split type AC systems provide the ideal solution to a very common problem that accompanies high-rise living in Hong Kong – the expense of maintenance/repairs and/or replacement of external condenser units.
External condenser units, more often than not, require scaffolding to access them safely for repairs, maintenance, or replacement. With scaffolding costs averaging at around HKD 2,500 for just 2.5m of scaffolding, a condenser with even a minor fault becomes a very expensive endeavor to repair. Which is exactly why ‘window-split-type’ ACs were created – the external condenser units are designed to fit perfectly where a window-type AC is currently located, or where a window-type was once located. Many of our clients have found themselves in a challenging position – a split-type AC has failed, typically from age and normal wear and tear, and the landlord is unwilling (or simply delaying action) to replace the AC owing to the high costs of scaffolding, or the lease is on the verge of ending, etc…there can be a plethora of issues entirely unrelated to challenges with a landlord that hinder the decision to replace a split-type AC where scaffolding is involved – as it’s simply a significant investment. Though certainly less common with newer developments, window-type AC platforms (AKA window-boxes) were once ubiquitous, and we’ve lost count of the number occasions where we’ve come across situations where a window-box has been entirely sealed off during a renovation, and it just so happens that a client really doesn’t want to spend a fortune on replacing a split type AC owing to the costs. Installing a window-split AC can often represent a 30% to 50% cost saving – and the solution was right there under everyone’s noses.
And of course there’s always stating the obvious – everyone knows that window-type ACs are noisy, inefficient energy guzzlers that have a very short lifespan these days…so instead of replacing a broken down window-type AC with another relic (though more modern looking) from the past, perhaps it’s worthwhile investing a few thousand dollars more to install a nice, quiet, more efficient, split-type AC system that can even be connected to WiFi and all the other cool gadgets that make our lives just that little bit more comfortable and convenient!
