FAQ

Q. Why should I get my Air Conditioning units cleaned?

Over time your Air-Conditioner will start to build up Bacteria which consist of mold, sludge, dirt, grime, dust and DNA particles. This will reduce your unit’s efficiency, the air-conditioner’s ability to cool/heat the air, and your unit will likely produce unpleasant odors. Most of all, an untreated air conditioner can cause health issues such as:

  • Flu-like symptoms (incl. repetitive symptoms)
  • Coughing and sore throat
  • Eye, nose and throat irritation
  • Congestion and wheezing
  • Headaches
  • Respiratory problems such as breathing difficulty, breathing irritation and/or breathing discomfort
  • Legionnaires’ Disease

Professional cleaning removes all contaminants, allowing for a well-maintained air-conditioner to work at an optimum level. The results of a professionally decontaminated and thoroughly deep cleaned air conditioner are reduced health risks, improved cooling/heating effectiveness by as much as 40%, reduced running costs by as much as 30%, and many more benefits.Below is a video of our Split-Type AC cleaning process which provides an insight into the quality of our service, as well as a crystal clear insight into just how much mold and dust can develop within a typical AC system within a relatively short period of time – the AC in this video was deep cleaned just 6 months prior!

Q. Will there be water spills?

Our setup is designed not to have any significant water spills to your walls or floors, however, in order to thoroughly clean your appliances a high-pressure water wash is required which will unavoidably result in a fine water mist and some water droplets escaping. This water mist will typically disperse and evaporate swiftly, but a small amount of condensation will often occur. Our staff are exceptionally mindful of your walls, floors, etc. and will ensure that any water droplets that may escape from our setup are cleaned up swiftly. However, please note that AirCare cannot be held responsible for the quality of paintwork on your walls, ceilings, door frames, etc. If the paintwork on your ceiling, walls or doorframes (or any other areas in close proximity to the units to be washed) is particularly delicate (for example, you’re aware that the paintwork is damaged easily from moisture) then please ensure to inform our personnel beforehand so that additional measures can be taken.

Q. How often should I get my Air Conditioning units cleaned?

An air conditioner is considered to be one of the “can’t live without” appliances in Hong Kong that are essential to ensure comfort in our homes, offices. schools, etc. Our reliance on these machines is not just for comfort but also to help improve our day-to-day efficiency. They help maintain a comfortable temperature whether it is summer or winter (for those who own ‘inverter’ units which can provide heating in addition to cooling). They also lower humidity levels much like a dehumidifier – but that isn’t all they do; air conditioners filter air by means of separating out airborne particles, bacteria, mold and odors. Just like your car, air conditioners have to be regularly maintained for them to keep operating at peak efficiency and extend their longevity. We recommend that typical domestic air conditioner units are cleaned twice per each year. The first time will be after you have been operating your units on a daily basis several weeks after the summer has begun, this is a good time to have them professionally cleaned to ensure that they are healthy and operating at an optimum level for the duration of the summer. The second time will be after the summer has passed and they are no longer in use. Whilst it may at first seem counterintuitive to have your air conditioners cleaned when they are no longer being used during the cooler months, it is very important to have them cleaned as significant contaminants will have built up inside your units during the heavy usage of the summer. These contaminants provide a foothold for mold to easily set in and grow throughout the cooler months, thus creating an unhealthy environment. You may have noticed that some air conditioners release a musty and unpleasant odor when they are first turned on at the beginning of the summer – that unpleasant odor is typically indicative of mold having developed and thrived in an unclean unit during the cooler months

With all that being said, every home or office is unique – how frequently any particular air conditioner unit should be professionally cleaned is dependent upon its level of usage, where it is located in the home or office, and several other environmental factors. Some examples; an air conditioning unit that is located inside a kitchen (or in the vicinity of an open kitchen for that matter), will likely need to be professionally cleaned more frequently as oils and other contaminants will adhere to the various components of the unit and act like an adhesive for dust, mold and bacteria to thrive on. We often find where air conditioning units are located close to bathrooms, that these units are more prone to develop higher levels of mold and mildew – so these will typically need to be deep cleaned more often too.Shortly after your AC’s have been cleaned, AirCare Solutions will email a brief report summarising our observations, and we’ll advise a recommended cleaning schedule. We’ll even forward you a Calendar Invitation to remind you about your next recommended booking, as well as to remind us to get in touch with you if we haven’t heard from you. This way you can rest assured that you won’t find yourself trying to get an appointment at the last minute, and that your AC’s will be well maintained all year around.

Q. Why does my air conditioning unit give off an unpleasant odor?

In most cases, your air-conditioner will be giving off unpleasant odors due to the amount of mold and bacteria within the air conditioning unit’s filters, fan barrel, coil and drip tray. Our deep professional clean will exterminate all bacteria and pungent smells emanating from the unit.

Q. Which areas do you service?

Several other informative articles can be found here

It should be noted that Air Conditioner manufacturers are frequently releasing new models and older models may become obsolete quite quickly – so it is common for spare parts to not be available locally, if at all, and there can often be a long wait whilst parts are delivered from overseas. Furthermore, repairing older model AC’s can be quite an expensive exercise both in regards to parts & labor – particularly for older Window-Type AC’s. In some cases our Technicians may advise that it would ultimately be less costly to simply replace the AC unit.In regards to availability, our technicians are exceptionally busy servicing our clients who have engaged us for Annual Preventative Maintenance & Cleaning Programmes, so whilst we will do our best to arrange an appointment for you swiftly, our technicians are seldom available on the same day. Furthermore, owing to the very nature of technical services delivery (all manner of unexpected issues can arise at preceding appointments), whilst our technicians will endeavor to arrive on time, we typically advise our clients of a 2 hour window for the visit. Should you wish to proceed with making an inquiry for Repair Service, please complete our Online Booking Inquiry Form here, and please ensure to check the box marked ‘Repairs & Installations’ and include any further additional information in the ‘Other’ field.

Q. How can I optimize the efficiency of my air conditioning units to minimize electricity consumption and maintenance costs?

The removable filters at the front of your air conditioning units are designed to prevent a considerable amount of household dust, oils, and other contaminants from entering into the working components of the unit. These filters should be regularly removed, rinsed thoroughly (with warm soapy water) to remove all dust and grime, and then placed back into the unit.
We recommend that you clean your filters yourself at least once per month – even a slightly dusty filter will reduce airflow, making your air conditioner work harder and therefore consume more electricity. We also recommend setting the temperature to anywhere between 22 to 24 degrees to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home or office. We frequently notice that customers are setting the temperature to anywhere between 16 degrees to 21 degrees – if it’s necessary to set such a low temperature in order to achieve a comfortable temperature in your home or office, then this is often indicative of several possibilities; (1) the unit is in need of a professional clean, or, (2) the unit may be malfunctioning, or, (3) the unit is inadequate for the area of coverage.

Q. Is there anything that I can do to reduce the rate of mold development in my air conditioner?

Is there anything that I can do to reduce the rate of mold development in my air conditioner?
The good news is yes, there are a few preventative maintenance actions that you can take that will reduce the rate of mold development with your AC systems, however, the bad news is that it is inevitible that mold will develop as air conditioning systems provide the perfect environment for mold to thrive in. So whilst mold development can be hindered, it is impossible to entirely prevent it – no matter what clever marketing materials for various miracle products that try to convince you otherwise.
1. The most effective preventative maintenance is to clean the return-air filters on a regular basis in order to ensure that airflow is not restricted – when return-air filters are too dirty, condensation will remain on the air conditioner coil for far longer after the AC is switched off as it is ‘trapped’, cannot evaporate as readily, and increases the level of humidity within the AC system. Furthermore, when return-air filters are exceptionally dirty, some airflow will take a ‘path of least resistence’ and dust will be pulled through various nooks and crannies into areas of the AC where you really don’t want dust to be – such as within electronics compartments.

2. If you’re removing the return-air filters on a regular basis for cleaning, this is also the perfect opportunity to treat the coil of your air conditioner with some preventative maintenance – spraying a liberal amount of Amber onto the coil will not only assist with significantly reducing mold, it will also help to reduce algae development in drainage pans as well as to assist in reducing the frequency of drainage line blockages. Please note: Amber can be sprayed on to the coil of split-type AC systems when the AC is running (spraying while the AC is running helps the product to penetrate deeper into the coil) but please ensure that window-type AC’s are switched off before applying Amber to the coil. Amber is a multi-purpose cleaner which is very effective for AC deep cleaning, as well as being gentle and safe for ACs, and it is environmentally friendly and biodegradable.

3. Many newer models of split-type air ACs have an ‘Anti-Mold’ feature that should be utilized if it is available. In very simple terms, the primary way that the anti-mold feature works is to assist in ‘drying out’ the coil of the AC after it is switched off, as well as to prevent condensation developing on the fan barrel and within the fan housing of the AC system. Essentially what happens is that after the AC is switched off, the fan of the AC will actually continue to run for several minutes afterwards on a low fan setting which is almost imperceptible. This continuation of airflow helps to reduce the level of condensation remaining on the coil, as well as allowing for the fan barrel and the fan housing to quickly return to room temperature which also reduces condensation development. If you have a split-type AC system that doesn’t have an anti-mold feature, it is quite simple to replicate – just change the mode of the AC to ‘fan only’ (no cooling) when you’re ready to switch the system off, and allow the AC to continue running on ‘fan only’ for 5 to 10 minutes. If you won’t be around 10 minutes later to physically turn the AC off – you can obviously utilize the timer function to turn the AC off after the desired length of time. This informative article provides some insights into the importance of maintaining return-air filters in a clean and dust-free condition

Q. Why do you provide a 10% Discount for clients who have guest car parking available?

The minimum required operating equipment that is required for the deep cleaning of air conditioning systems weighs in excess of 30kg (and often weighs significantly more depending upon the total number of AC’s to be cleaned, and the total number and type of ladder(s) that are required. Essentially it comes down to efficiency, convenience, economies of scale, and reduced labor. When a client has convenient guest car parking available, our personnel can arrive at the appointment, park the vehicle, unload the vehicle, and be at the residence (or place of business) within minutes. Contrast this to instances where no guest car parking is available – our personnel arrive at the appointment, they must find somewhere where they can unload the vehicle (not all residences/businesses have loading bays), then unload the vehicle, then one (or more) personnel must carry all of the equipment to the appointment, whilst one personnel must drive the vehicle to the nearest hourly car parking facility, and then return on foot to the appointment. This is significantly time consuming, often adding in excess of 30 minutes to the total time required for the booking, especially considering that the process is repeated at the conclusion of the appointment. Further information about our Car Parking Terms of Service can be found here at #2

Q. What are your standard Terms of Service?

Please see here for AirCare Solutions standard Terms of Service. All AirCare Solutions clients are advised to review our standard Terms of Service upon confirmation of their booking.
